Fierce gales and heavy rain are expected to batter parts of the Lothians as the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo hits parts of Scotland on Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for coastal areas around Scotland – but the Lothians and central Scotland are set to bypass the worst of the weather.

A Met Office spokesman insisted the wind and rain wouldn’t be any worse than a typical autumn storm.

He said: “It will basically be a typical Autumnal spell of weather, with heavy rain and gales and a fall in temperature. It’s perfectly normal weather for mid-October.

“It will affect traffic in coastal areas, and there is likely to be some standing water and short-lived incidents, but the worst of the rain will be overnight. It will be a very windy day on Tuesday.

“But for the block of mainland Scotland there is no warning out – it’s mainly going to be a coastal feature.”

The worst of the gales are expected to hit on Tuesday morning, with heavy rain throughout Monday night.
