Ben Macpherson has formally resigned from his position as the Scottish Government’s Minister for Innovation, Technology and Tertiary Education.
The MSP for Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith announced his departure in a resignation letter addressed to First Minister John Swinney citing a need to prioritise his “physical and mental health.”
Having returned to the frontbenches in September 2025, Macpherson described the resignation as a “very difficult decision,” concluding that holding ministerial office is no longer the right path for him at this time.
In his letter, Macpherson said: “I have, however, reflected very deeply in recent months about my position and priorities in my life, and feel I need more time to be able to attend to other important pressures, people and purposes, including my mental and physical well-being”.
For his constituents across Edinburgh and Leith, Macpherson’s return to the backbenches signals a renewed focus on local priorities.
He stated: “Without the constraints and demands of a Ministerial role, I also want to have more time and scope to serve my constituency of Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith, and to pursue various political passions outwith government”.
He reassured the First Minister that his portfolio is left in a “stronger place,” with vital strategic workstreams already up and running, whilst reiterating his ongoing support for both Swinney and the current government.
In response, First Minister John Swinney thanked Macpherson for his “significant contribution in government,” particularly noting his leadership on the Education and Training Act 2026.
Swinney wished the outgoing minister well, hoping his time away from the pressures of government will lead him to a “stronger, more resilient place”.
A reshuffle to fill the vacant education and innovation brief is expected in the coming days.
