Both the areas Lowland League sides picked up wins yesterday to keep them fighting for a top-six finish.

Spartans made the trip across town to face league strugglers, Edinburgh University, at Peffermill.

Dougie Samuels men went into the game on the back of a good win the previous week against Stirling Uni.

The Ainslie Park said taught the students a lesson about finishing and found themselves three goals up int he first half-hour after Blair Atkinson, Scott Maxwell and Jack Smith all found the net.

Neil Blair pulled one back for the students before Maxwell bagged his second of the day when he flicked in an Aaron Scott corner.

Both teams scored late on.

Along at Muirhouse Civil Service Strollers welcomed Gretna 2008 to Christie Gillies Park.

Gary Jardine’s side went into the game on the back of a controversial defeat last week to league leaders, Kelty Hearts.

Neither side created any chances and the only goal in the game came late on when Cammy Muirhead played in Craig Newall who fired the ball into the net from close range.

A terrific save from the Gretna keeper denied Muirhead a goal in stoppage time.
